A Tribute to a Dedicated Officer and a Noble Soul: In Memory of Shri P. K. Subudhiroy IRS
By Lokanath Mishra
The news received on the morning of 7th April 2026 has cast a deep shadow of grief and disbelief. Shri P. K. Subudhiray, an esteemed officer of Customs and Central GST, Bhubaneswar, is no more. His sudden demise due to a heart attack while on a family visit to the Andaman and Nicobar Islands has left colleagues, friends, and the entire departmental fraternity profoundly shocked. At a time when he was on the threshold of his retirement in May 2026, this untimely departure feels especially tragic and irreparable.

Shri Subudhiray served as Assistant Commissioner with distinction, embodying dedication, integrity, and professional excellence throughout his career. Having worked closely with him from his early days as an Inspector and later as a Superintendent, I had the privilege of witnessing his steady growth into a highly competent and dependable officer. He was not only brilliant in his understanding of law and procedure but also meticulous in execution, earning the respect and admiration of both his seniors and subordinates.
What truly distinguished Shri Subudhiray was his nature as a very nice, humble, and exceptionally helpful person. He was always ready to extend guidance and support to colleagues, especially to younger officers who looked up to him for mentorship. His approachable demeanor, calm temperament, and willingness to assist others made him not only a respected officer but also a beloved human being. In moments of professional difficulty or personal concern, he stood by others with quiet strength and compassion.
His passing is not just a personal loss to those who knew him closely but a significant loss to the department as a whole. Officers like him form the backbone of the system—quietly efficient, ethically grounded, and deeply committed to public service. The void created by his absence will be difficult to fill.
Beyond his professional life, Shri Subudhiray was a devoted family man. That he breathed his last while spending time with his loved ones reminds us of the unpredictable nature of life. In the midst of grief, this also serves as a poignant reminder that life’s true wealth lies in moments shared with family and in the relationships we nurture.
In times like these, words often fall short. Yet, spiritual wisdom offers us some solace. The eternal truth, as reflected in our scriptures, reminds us that the soul is immortal. The body perishes, but the आत्मा (soul) continues its journey. The Bhagavad Gita teaches that just as a person sheds worn-out garments and puts on new ones, so too does the soul discard the old body and take on a new form. Death, therefore, is not an end but a transition—a passage from one state of existence to another.
While this understanding may not lessen the pain of separation, it gives strength to accept the inevitable with grace. Shri Subudhiray’s life, marked by dedication, humility, and righteousness, stands as a testimony to कर्मयोग—the path of selfless action. Such a life leaves behind not just memories, but a legacy of values that continue to inspire.
As we mourn his loss, let us also celebrate the life he lived—with honesty, diligence, kindness, and quiet dignity. Let us carry forward his ideals in our own work and conduct. That would be the true tribute to a life well lived.
On behalf of all who had the privilege of knowing and working with him, heartfelt condolences are extended to his bereaved family. May they find strength in this hour of sorrow, and may the departed soul attain eternal peace.
Om Shanti.
