Every year, with the arrival of late autumn, the olive groves around Kalamata in Greece become centres of busy activity. Olive harvesting is not merely an agricultural work; it is an important part of the culture and daily life of the people of Messinia.
Families and workers spread nets beneath the olive trees and carefully collect the ripe fruits. Traditionally, olives are brought down by hand or by gently shaking and tapping the branches. Today, modern equipment is also used in many groves. The harvested olives are then taken to nearby mills for the production of the famous Kalamata olive oil.
