Timeless Love: A Beacon of Hope in the Face of Adversity
By Lokanath Mishra
In the early twentieth century, a remarkable tale of unconditional love and acceptance unfolded, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of those who witnessed it. Arup, a devoted husband, stood by his beautiful wife Radhika through thick and thin, even when she was afflicted with leprosy, a mysterious and debilitating disease that gradually took away her physical beauty.

Their love story began like any other, with Arup and Radhika falling deeply in love and getting married amidst great fanfare. Radhika was the epitome of beauty, with a radiant smile and sparkling eyes that captivated everyone around her. Arup, on the other hand, was a hardworking man who adored his wife and showered her with love and affection.
But fate had other plans. Radhika was diagnosed with leprosy, a disease that was shrouded in mystery and stigma. As the disease progressed, Radhika’s physical beauty began to fade, leaving her feeling isolated and alone. But Arup stood by her side, nursing her back to health and showering her with love and affection.
Tragedy struck when Arup met with an accident, resulting in the loss of his eyesight – or so it seemed. In reality, he chose to pretend to be blind, selflessly putting Radhika’s feelings above his own. He feared that his reaction to her physical transformation would cause her more pain, and so he “acted blind” to spare her the anguish.
This extraordinary act of love and sacrifice is a testament to the transformative power of unconditional acceptance. Arup’s decision not only shielded Radhika’s feelings but also strengthened their bond. Despite her gradual loss of beauty, their married life continued as usual, with love and mutual respect being the guiding forces.
As Radhika’s condition worsened, she became increasingly withdrawn and isolated. Arup, with the help of his lady attendant, ensured that she was well taken care of. The attendant would cook her favorite meals, help her with her daily routine, and even take her on gentle walks around the house. Arup would sit by her side, holding her hand, and talking to her in a soothing voice, trying to lift her spirits.
One fateful day, Radhika took her own life, leaving Arup devastated. In his darkest moment, he revealed the truth about his pretended blindness, showcasing the depth of his love and commitment.
As the news of Radhika’s passing spread, the community came together to mourn the loss of a beautiful soul. But they were also inspired by Arup’s extraordinary act of love and sacrifice. His selflessness and devotion had transcended the boundaries of physical beauty, speaking to the very essence of the human spirit.
This narrative offers valuable lessons for us all. It highlights the importance of forgiveness, unity, and togetherness in our relationships. Just as the teeth and tongue coexist in harmony, and the eyes work together in unison, we too can strive for a deeper understanding and acceptance of each other’s strengths and weaknesses.
As we reflect on this inspiring tale, let us remember the wise words: “Sometimes it is good for us to act blind and ignore one another’s shortcomings, in order to be happy.” May we all be blessed with the spirit of forgiveness, unity, and togetherness, and may our relationships be strengthened by the power of unconditional love and acceptance.
