Renuka, a final-year law student from a conservative Telugu Brahmin family in Berhampur, was on the cusp of a life-changing decision. Her mother, adhering to traditional norms, was pressuring her to marry a junior clerk from their community. Despite her repeated refusals, citing her career and job as reasons, her mother wouldn’t budge.

One day, Renuka’s mother physically forced her to get ready to meet the boy, but Renuka refused, revealing a shocking truth – she was already married. She had secretly married a Sate Administrative Officer but from a different caste and religion, a tribal Christian guy, through a court marriage two years prior. Renuka had been living at home without revealing her marital status, not wanting to hurt her family.

The revelation sparked a dramatic reaction from her family. Renuka was slapped multiple times, dragged, and thrown out of her house. Her husband came to pick her up, and they held a reception party soon after, but none of her family members attended. Her family severed all ties with her due to the caste issue.

Despite the challenges, Renuka’s in-laws and husband have been supportive and loving. She has two daughters and a son and a happy life. Renuka is now a successful lawyer, and her husband is a promotee IAS officer . However, the pain of being abandoned by her family still lingers. It’s been 25 years since the incident, and there’s still no contact between Renuka and her family.

This story highlights the struggles faced by those who dare to challenge societal norms and family expectations. Caste and religion continue to play a significant role in many communities, often leading to heart-wrenching consequences. Renuka’s story is a testament to the strength of love and the importance of acceptance.
