A Life-Changing Moment of Kindness Part 2

By Lokanath Mishra

Nalini had grown comfortable working at Damodar’s home, often removing her dupatta and hanging it up while she cooked or cleaned. After finishing her tasks, she would chat with Damodar, finding solace in their conversations and feeling more relaxed. One day, as she mopped the floor, Damodar sat nearby, watching her work. He suddenly asked, “Do you always work like this, without covering yourself?” Nalini replied, “Yes, sir, I don’t feel like working with a dupatta on.”

Damodar’s expression turned concerned, and he said, “Don’t take offense, but look at your kurta’s neckline.” When Nalini glanced down, she realized her kurta was low-cut, revealing more than she intended. Damodar continued, “As an older person, I understand that men might notice when something is visible. If they look, people might blame them, but it’s better to be mindful of how we dress. I’m saying this to help you, not to criticize.”

Nalini felt a lump form in her throat as she listened to Damodar’s words. It was as if her teacher or mother was speaking to her, offering guidance and care. She looked up at Damodar, feeling a sense of gratitude. “You’re right, sir. But no one has ever told me this before, so I never thought about it,” she said, covering herself with her dupatta and tying it around her waist.

In that moment, Nalini realized the importance of being mindful of her attire and how it might affect others. Damodar’s kind words had taught her a valuable lesson, one that she would carry with her from then on. His guidance had not only helped her understand the importance of modesty but also shown her that kindness and care could come from unexpected places. ( to be continued in part-3)
