The Difference Between a Girlfriend and a Wife
By Lokanath Mishra
Amar sat down next to Ravina, an Indian woman, at a riverside restaurant in Houston, and they started chatting after dinner. Ravina shared her insights on the difference between a girlfriend and a wife, highlighting how men often treat their girlfriends with more care and attention than their wives.

“Men are often surprised to think why their girlfriend is so sweet and wife is so grumpy?” Ravina said with a smile. “Actually, this difference is the result of their own behavior.” She explained that when men are dating, they often go the extra mile to impress their girlfriends, taking them on long drives, buying them gifts, and showering them with attention. However, after marriage, the dynamics change, and men often expect their wives to take care of household chores and responsibilities.
Ravina shared her personal experience, having been a girlfriend first and then becoming the wife of the same person after marriage. She got enough experience about the both girlfriend and wife. According to her:
Girlfriend vs. Wife

- Girlfriend: A girlfriend is a romantic partner in a casual or informal relationship, with no legal rights or responsibilities. The relationship is often seen as temporary, and there’s no expectation of long-term commitment.
- Wife: A wife, on the other hand, is a legally binding partner, with rights and responsibilities that come with marriage. She’s expected to be a partner, homemaker, and caregiver, and is often seen as a more committed and long-term partner.
Ravina then shared a humorous anecdote about a situation where
a young man Atul told his wife Rita that he was going to work, but he actually went to Ruby his girlfriend’s house, whose husband was a sales manager. But suddenly when the sales manager came back home unexpectedly, Atul quickly hid under the bed.
The sales manager Ranjan sent his wife off to the market, and Atul remained hidden under the bed. To his surprise, he overheard the sales manager inviting a lady over the phone. The lady arrived, and shortly after, the sales manager’s wife came back, citing that her clothes were stained and she wanted to change them.
Before the sales manager could open the door, he told the lady to hide under the bed. As fate would have it, the lady who came face-to-face with Atul under the bed turned out to be his wife Rita. They looked at each other like rabbits, without saying a word.
The situation was exposed, and both couples exchanged words.

Ravina highlighted the cultural differences between India and America, where people in India are generally happy with their marriages and wives, and most don’t have girlfriends. In contrast, people in America are trying to learn from India about living peacefully with one wife, while people in India are trying to learn from America about keeping a girlfriend. The story of Atul-Ruby and Ranjan- Rita is based on American society.
The story is a lighthearted take on the complexities of relationships and the unexpected twists that can occur in life. It emphasizes the importance of communication, trust, and commitment in a relationship. Ravina’s insights provide a valuable perspective on how to live happily with your wife, highlighting the need for men to appreciate and respect their wives, rather than taking them for granted.
