Chapter 14: Mount Titlis – A Journey into the Eternal Kingdom of Snow

On the morning of 18th July 2026, we woke up early at Hotel Central, Engelberg, after enjoying a comfortable night’s stay amidst the peaceful Swiss Alps. Looking through the hotel window, we were greeted by magnificent mountain peaks, green meadows and fresh Alpine air. It was another beautiful summer morning in Switzerland.
After a delicious Indian breakfast, we thanked the hotel staff for their warm hospitality and checked out of the hotel. Our luggage was loaded into the Star Tour luxury coach, and within a few minutes we reached Engelberg Railway Station, the starting point for our exciting journey to the world-famous Mount Titlis.
This was another dream destination of our European tour.
Engelberg – The Mountain of Angels
The town of Engelberg means “Mountain of Angels.”
According to local tradition, in the twelfth century, monks heard heavenly voices while searching for a suitable place to establish a monastery. They believed that angels had guided them to this beautiful valley. Consequently, Engelberg Abbey was founded in 1120, and over the centuries the village gradually developed around it.
Today, Engelberg is one of Switzerland’s most famous mountain resorts. During winter it attracts thousands of skiers from around the world, while in summer it welcomes tourists who come to enjoy glaciers, mountain scenery and outdoor activities.
The village itself is beautifully maintained, with flower-decorated wooden houses, green pastures and snow-covered mountains forming an unforgettable panorama.
Mount Titlis – The Crown of Central Switzerland
Mount Titlis is one of Switzerland’s most famous Alpine peaks.
It rises to an elevation of 3,238 metres (10,623 feet) above sea level and is the highest mountain in the region surrounding Engelberg.
Unlike many mountain peaks that lose their snow during summer, Titlis possesses a permanent glacier. Therefore, visitors can enjoy snow throughout the year.
Every year, more than a million tourists from every continent visit Mount Titlis to experience its glaciers, spectacular scenery and modern mountain transport system.
The mountain has become an international symbol of Swiss tourism.
The Journey by Cable Car
Our adventure began at the Titlis valley station.
The journey to the summit is completed in several stages using different types of cable cars.
The first cable car carried us gently above green meadows, forests and traditional Swiss farmhouses. As we ascended, the scenery became increasingly spectacular.
The second stage took us even higher over rocky mountain slopes, waterfalls and Alpine pastures.
Finally, we boarded the world-famous Titlis Rotair, the world’s first rotating aerial cable car.
This remarkable engineering achievement slowly rotates 360 degrees during the ascent, enabling every passenger to enjoy uninterrupted panoramic views without changing seats.
As the cable car climbed higher, enormous glaciers, deep valleys and snow-covered mountain peaks appeared in every direction.
The experience was simply unforgettable.
From the windows we could see tiny villages far below, winding mountain roads and sparkling lakes surrounded by forests.
The journey itself was almost as exciting as reaching the summit.
Arrival at Mount Titlis
Upon reaching the summit station, we stepped into a magical world of snow and ice.
Although it was the middle of July, the entire mountain remained covered with brilliant white snow.
The temperature was far below that of the valleys.
The fresh mountain air, dazzling sunshine reflected from the snow and magnificent Alpine scenery created an atmosphere beyond description.
For us, who had travelled all the way from India, it was a wonderful opportunity to experience everlasting snow.
Playing in the Snow
Like children, all four of us forgot our age and became completely absorbed in the joy of the moment.
We walked carefully across the snowfields, laughed together, threw handfuls of snow at one another and posed for numerous photographs.
For many Indian tourists, touching natural snow for the first time is an unforgettable emotional experience.
The snow was soft, clean and sparkling in the bright sunshine.
After walking for some time, we even lay down on the snow, enjoying its cool softness and admiring the deep blue sky above us.
Those joyful moments remain among the happiest memories of our entire European journey.
Titlis Cliff Walk
One of the greatest attractions of Mount Titlis is the famous Titlis Cliff Walk.
This suspension bridge is considered one of the highest suspension bridges in Europe.
Constructed at an altitude of more than 3,000 metres, it stretches across a deep mountain gorge.
Walking across the bridge was both thrilling and exciting.
Strong winds, towering cliffs and endless glaciers below created an unforgettable feeling of adventure.
The bridge demonstrates the remarkable engineering skill of the Swiss people.
Glacier Cave
Another fascinating attraction was the Glacier Cave.
This tunnel has been carved deep inside the glacier itself.
The walls, ceiling and floor are entirely made of ancient blue ice that has existed for thousands of years.
Special lighting creates magical reflections throughout the cave, giving visitors the impression of entering a crystal palace.
Walking through this frozen tunnel was a unique experience.
The cave also reminds visitors of the importance of protecting glaciers from the effects of global climate change.
Ice Flyer Chairlift
One of the most exciting experiences on Mount Titlis is the Ice Flyer Chairlift.
The open chairlift glides high above deep crevasses in the glacier, providing magnificent views of the surrounding snowfields and ice formations.
From the chairlift, visitors can clearly observe the enormous glacier stretching towards the distant mountains.
The experience combines excitement with breathtaking natural beauty.
Snow Park
The Titlis Glacier Park offers numerous recreational activities during the summer season.
Visitors enjoy:
- Snow tubing.
- Sliding on snow.
- Snow games.
- Photography.
- Walking across the glacier.
- Building snowmen.
- Family recreation.
Children and adults alike thoroughly enjoy these activities.
Watching people from different countries laughing and playing together in the snow beautifully demonstrated that nature unites humanity beyond national boundaries.
Scientific Importance
Mount Titlis is not merely a tourist destination.
Scientists regularly study its glaciers to understand climate change, snowfall patterns and environmental conservation.
Like many Alpine glaciers, the Titlis Glacier has gradually reduced in size over recent decades because of rising global temperatures.
This reminds humanity of the urgent need to protect our environment through responsible development and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.
Safety Measures
The Swiss authorities have developed Mount Titlis with great care.
Modern cable cars, safety barriers, weather monitoring systems, emergency medical services and trained rescue teams ensure that tourists can safely enjoy the mountain.
Visitors are advised to wear warm clothing, waterproof shoes, gloves, sunglasses and sunscreen.
Because of the high altitude and changing weather, tourists should avoid unnecessary risks and always follow official instructions.
Reflections
Our visit to Mount Titlis was another unforgettable chapter of our European tour.
Unlike Jungfraujoch, which impressed us through its remarkable railway engineering, Mount Titlis fascinated us with its rotating cable car, suspension bridge, glacier cave and endless opportunities to enjoy snow throughout the year.
As we laughed, played and rested upon the snow-covered mountain, I realised that true happiness often lies in the simple pleasures of life.
Nature has bestowed extraordinary beauty upon Switzerland, while the Swiss people have developed these mountains with exceptional scientific knowledge, engineering skill and environmental responsibility.
Leaving Mount Titlis, our hearts were filled with joy and gratitude. The memories of Engelberg, the Rotair cable car, the Glacier Cave, the Cliff Walk and the endless white snow will remain forever among the most precious experiences of our lives.
