Mahabharata in Prose – Part 43 (continued)

Though the सभा had dispersed and the immediate संकट had been averted by the wisdom of Draupadi, the fire of envy within Duryodhana was far from extinguished. His pride, wounded before all, demanded revenge—not justice, but domination.

Once the Pandavas prepared to depart for Indraprastha, believing the storm had passed, Shakuni intervened once more. With soft yet poisonous words, he persuaded Dhritarashtra to invite Yudhishthira again for a second game of dice.

Pandavas exile

“Let the matter be settled completely,” he said. “One final game—without dispute.”

Blinded by affection for his son, Dhritarashtra consented.

A second invitation was sent.

When it reached Yudhishthira, sorrow filled his heart. He understood the danger, yet once again, bound by the rigid code of kshatriya honor and obedience to elders, he could not refuse.

Returning to Hastinapura, the Pandavas entered the सभा once more—this time with a sense of foreboding.

The game began, swift and decisive.

The stakes were declared beforehand: the losers would go into exile for twelve years, followed by one year of incognito living. If discovered during that final year, the exile would begin anew.

The dice rolled.

And once again, guided by Shakuni’s deceit, Yudhishthira lost.

A deep silence followed—the kind that marks the turning of destiny.

Duryodhana’s voice broke it with cruel satisfaction.
“The terms are clear. The Pandavas shall go into exile.”

Thus, stripped not only of their kingdom but of their rightful place in society, the five brothers stood bound by the परिणाम of the game.

Draupadi stood beside them, her face calm but resolute. She had endured humiliation, and now she would endure hardship.

Without protest, yet with heavy hearts, the Pandavas prepared to leave their kingdom behind.

And so began their वनवास—the exile that would test their strength, patience, and unity.
