In a world where divorce rates seem to be skyrocketing, Hindus in the United States have been found to have the lowest divorce rate, with only 5% of Hindus having been divorced. This remarkable statistic is just one of the many findings of a landmark survey conducted by the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life.
The survey, which interviewed over 35,000 adults, revealed that Hindus are not only the most likely to be married (78%), but also the most likely to be married to someone within their own faith (90%). This strong sense of community and tradition is reflected in the high percentage of Hindus who have obtained postgraduate education (48%), far exceeding the national average.
One such Hindu family, the Patels, embodies the values of education, hard work, and devotion. Rohan, a successful engineer, and his wife, Priya, a doctor, have been married for over 10 years and have two beautiful children. They are proud of their Hindu heritage and make sure to pass on their values and traditions to their children.
The Patels are not alone in their success. The survey found that Hindus, along with Jews, are more likely to report high income levels, with over 40% of Hindus earning more than $100,000 per year. This prosperity is a testament to the hard work and dedication of Hindu Americans.
As Luis Lugo, director of the Pew Forum, noted, “People will be surprised by the amount of movement by Americans from one religious group to another–or to no religion at all.” However, for Hindus like the Patels, their faith is an integral part of their identity and plays a significant role in their lives.
The survey also highlighted the importance of immigration in shaping the US religious landscape. Hindus, Muslims, and members of Orthodox churches are among the groups most heavily comprised of immigrants, with 86% of Hindus in the US being born in another country.
As the US population becomes increasingly diverse, the survey’s findings serve as a reminder of the importance of understanding and accommodating different cultures and faiths. As Lugo said, “Even 5% of folks from these other world religions, which to most Americans are very new and very strange, generates a significant challenge for the country to begin to expand the process of accommodating beyond the categories that are most comfortable with–Protestant, Catholic, and Jew.”
