The Miraculous Shrine of Shani Shingnapur

In the heart of Maharashtra, India, lies the quaint village of Shani Shingnapur, famous for its revered temple of Shani, the Hindu god associated with the planet Saturn. This sacred site has been a beacon of hope and devotion for thousands of pilgrims who flock to the village daily, seeking the blessings of Lord Shani.
The story of the shrine’s origin is steeped in legend. It is said that a shepherd discovered a unique, swayambhu (self-manifested) black stone in the village, which began to bleed when touched with a pointed rod. The news of this miraculous event spread quickly, and soon, the whole village gathered to witness the phenomenon.
That night, Lord Shani appeared in the dream of the most devoted shepherd, revealing himself as the embodiment of the black stone. The shepherd prayed to Lord Shani, asking if he should construct a temple for him. Lord Shani replied that there was no need for a roof, as the entire sky was his roof, and he preferred to remain under the open sky.
The shepherd was instructed to perform daily pooja and ‘Tailabhisheka’ (anointing with oil) every Saturday. Lord Shani also promised that the village would be protected from harm, and that none of the structures within a kilometer radius of the temple would need doors or locks.
True to Lord Shani’s promise, the village of Shani Shingnapur has remained a haven of peace and security. There have been no reported incidents of theft, burglary, or violence in the village’s history. The villagers have lived in harmony, and the temple has become a symbol of their devotion and faith.
The shrine itself is a simple, yet majestic structure. The five-and-a-half-foot-high black rock, representing Lord Shani, is installed on an open-air platform. A trident (Trishula) is placed alongside the statue, and a Nandi (bull) image is situated on the south side. In front of the shrine are smaller images of Shiva and Hanuman.
Every day, thousands of devotees throng the temple, offering prayers, flowers, and udid (sacred ash) to Lord Shani. The temple is especially crowded on Saturdays, and on new moon days that fall on Saturdays, when a grand festival is held in honor of the deity.

A Pilgrim’s Experience: Visiting the Shani Shingnapur Temple
As I stepped into the village of Shani Shingnapur on 27th March 2025, I could feel the air thick with devotion and spirituality. My heart was filled with excitement and anticipation, for I had longed to visit the revered Shani Shingnapur Temple.
As I made my way through the crowded streets, I was struck by the simplicity and humility of the villagers. Despite the thousands of devotees thronging the temple, there was an eerie sense of calm and serenity that pervaded the air.
As I entered the temple complex, I was immediately drawn to the majestic black stone statue of Lord Shani. The sheer energy emanating from the statue was palpable, and I felt a deep sense of connection to the divine.
I spent several hours within the temple complex, soaking in the spiritual atmosphere and marveling at the devotion of the pilgrims. I witnessed the ritual of ‘Tailabhisheka’ being performed, and I was struck by the sense of community and camaraderie that existed among the devotees.
As I prepared to leave the temple, I felt a deep sense of gratitude and peace. My visit to the Shani Shingnapur Temple had been a truly transformative experience, one that had left an indelible mark on my soul.
