The Turbulent Life of Pinky : A Cautionary Tale Against Divorce.
( A true story)
By Lokanath Mishra

Pinky, a bright and ambitious girl with a Master’s degree in Psychology, fell deeply in love with her classmate, who later became a probationary officer in a nationalized bank. They got married and lived happily for nearly a year in her father-in-law’s house in a small town. However, cracks began to appear in their relationship due to Pinky’s disobedience to her mother-in-law and her prioritizing her mother’s instructions over her husband’s needs.

The tension simmered beneath the surface until Pinky’s husband was deputed for training in Delhi. Pinky wanted to accompany him, but he refused, citing family obligations and the high cost of living in Delhi. This sparked a heated argument, and Pinky asserted her independence. Her husband eventually agreed to let her join him, but the disagreement had already escalated.
Pinky’s mother-in-law intervened, requesting her to stay, and Pinky compromised, agreeing to stay behind but living at her parents’ house. When her husband returned from Delhi, he didn’t come to pick her up. Pinky’s mother, fueled by her own biases, forced Pinky not to return to her husband’s house.
The misunderstandings and ego clashes continued to widen the gap between Pinky and her husband. Pinky’s mother was very adamant, and Pinky and her mother misbehaved not only with her husband but also with the entire family. Finally, they agreed to a mutual divorce without alimony.
After her divorce, Pinky entered into a live-in relationship with a wealthy businessman 20 years her senior. Initially, everything seemed perfect, but fate had other plans. When her partner met with an accident, Pinky’s life became a nightmare. Her partner’s 70-year-old father would secretly watch her while she took baths, making her feel uncomfortable and disrespected.
Despite her initial attempts to ignore the behavior, Pinky eventually confronted him, warning him to never repeat the behavior. However, the situation became unbearable, and Pinky was forced to leave the house, feeling like a concubine.
With nowhere else to go, she returned to her father’s house, only to face rejection and disdain from her brothers and sisters-in-law. Pinky’s life had hit rock bottom. She worked at a coaching center for a meager salary and relied on a small family pension after her parents’ passing.
Pinky’s turbulent life raises important questions about the consequences of divorce and the importance of perseverance, forgiveness, and communication in making a marriage work. In today’s society, divorce has become increasingly common, with many couples opting for separation without exhausting all avenues of reconciliation.
Pinky’s story highlights the importance of working through differences and prioritizing love and commitment. Moreover, Pinky’s experience serves as a reminder of the societal stigma attached to divorce, particularly for women. The rejection and disdain she faced from her family members are a stark reality for many women who have gone through divorce.
Pinky’s story is a call to action for couples to re-evaluate their priorities and work towards building stronger, more resilient marriages. It’s a reminder that divorce is not a solution to marital problems, but rather a last resort. As a society, we must work towards creating a more supportive and inclusive environment for couples facing marital challenges.
Ultimately, Pinky’s story is a testament to the human spirit’s capacity for resilience and survival. It’s a reminder that even in the darkest of times, there is always hope for redemption, forgiveness, and a second chance.

For a successful married life, husbands and wives should strive to adjust to each other and accommodate their differences, rather than creating divisions. Additionally, the mother of the bride should avoid interfering in her daughter’s daily life, as this can greatly facilitate a smooth and harmonious conjugal life. Unfortunately, in many cases, the mother’s involvement can be counterproductive and even destructive. Therefore, newlywed women would do well to seek guidance from their mothers-in-law, while still maintaining a respectful relationship with their own mothers.
