What is this Kumbh Mela? I tried to understand the history of Kumbh, Ardh Kumbh, Purna Kumbh & Maha Kumbh. Rushi Durvasha, Sura and Asur fight for dominance. Lord Indra invokes and Sagar Manthan Planned for getting the Amrit. But Bisa, Laxmi, Eairabat, Panchajanya also came out before Amrit was found. Neelkantha drank the poison. Fight broke out between sura and asura which continued for 12 days.
Amrit Kalash was taken by Jayant, Indra’s son. Drops of nectar fell at Nashik, Ujjain, Haridwar and Prayag Raj. These places become the rivers for holy dip celebration of Kumbh mela in turn at an interval of 12 years.
Finally after 144 years (12 x 12), the Purna kumbh at Prayagraj becomes Maha Kumbh.
