THE HALF OTP
A Humorous Incident in Nayagarh:
By Lokanath Mishra:
he winter morning in Nayagarh had begun peacefully.
A thin mist hung over the paddy fields. The roads were slowly filling with bicycles, motorcycles and auto-rickshaws. At the corner of the main road, the usual tea shop of Gopal Sahu was already crowded with retired government employees, farmers, businessmen and a few young men who seemed to have no particular work except discussing the affairs of the entire world.

But in a modest house not far from Nayagarh town, an incident was about to take place which would become the favourite joke of the entire neighbourhood.
The hero of the story was Krushna Chandra Mishra, popularly known as Kalia Babu.
After nearly four decades of government service, Kalia Babu had retired.
Retirement had brought him a peaceful life, a regular pension and, most importantly, his hard-earned savings.
In accordance with the applicable pension-banking arrangement, he had a joint bank account with his wife, Kamala Devi.
Over the years, he had accumulated considerable savings. An amount of ₹3 crore had originally been deposited, and with interest and subsequent credits, the balance had grown to well above ₹3 crore.
Kalia Babu was extremely careful about the money.
He treated the bank account almost as carefully as a priest treats the deity of a temple.
Every few days he checked the balance.
Every few days he checked the transaction history.
And whenever he heard about a cyber-fraud case, he would give his wife another lecture.
The Lecture:
One morning, while drinking his tea, Kalia Babu said:
“Kamala, remember one thing.”
Kamala did not even look up from the newspaper.
“What?”
“Never give your OTP to anybody.”
“I know.”
“Even if somebody says he is calling from the bank.”
“I know.”
“Even if he says your account will be blocked.”
“I know.”
“Even if he says there is an emergency.”
“I know.”
“Even if he says he is the bank manager.”
“I know!”
Kalia Babu smiled.
“Good. Then you understand.”
Kamala folded the newspaper.
“Do you think I am foolish?”
“No.”
“Then why do you repeat the same thing every day?”
“Because our money is important.”
Kamala nodded.
“Don’t worry. I will never give anyone my OTP.”
Kalia Babu was satisfied.

He had no idea that his wife’s interpretation of “never giving an OTP” was going to be very different from his own.
A Short Journey to Nayagarh:
That morning Kalia Babu had some work in Nayagarh town.
Before leaving, he placed his principal mobile phone on the dining table.
“I am leaving this phone here.”
“Why?”
“I’ll take my other phone. I won’t be gone long.”
“Fine.”
He picked up his bag and walked towards the door.
Then he turned around.
“Kamala!”
“What?”
“Don’t give anybody the OTP.”
Kamala became irritated.
“I told you already!”
Kalia Babu smiled and left.
The house became quiet.
Kamala completed her household work.
She watered the plants, prepared lunch and sat down in front of the television.
Then, after nearly an hour—
TRRRRING!
Kalia Babu’s mobile phone rang.
Kamala picked it up.
“Hello?”
A man’s voice came from the other side.
“Madam, I am calling regarding your bank account.”
“Yes?”
“There is an issue requiring verification.”
“What issue?”
“Nothing to worry about, madam. We just need to verify a transaction.”
Kamala became attentive.
“How?”
“An OTP has been sent to the registered mobile number. Please tell me the OTP.”
Kamala immediately remembered her husband’s warning.
Never give the OTP.
She looked at the SMS.
The message clearly displayed:
OTP: 4598
The caller waited.
“Madam, please tell me the OTP.”
Kamala did not want to disobey her husband.
But she also wanted to cooperate with what she believed was the bank.
Suddenly an idea struck her.
She thought:
Our account is a joint account.
My husband and I are equal account holders.
Therefore, perhaps the OTP should also be divided equally.
She took a piece of paper.
She wrote:
4598
Then she calculated:
4598 ÷ 2 = 2299
She smiled.
She had found the solution.
The Conversation:
The caller asked again:
“Madam, please tell me the OTP.”
Kamala replied confidently:
“2299.”
There was a pause.
“Madam?”
“Yes?”
“That is not the OTP.”
Kamala smiled and told whatever I received, I informed you.
The caller was confused and disconnected the call.
And she also disconnected the call.
She sat back proudly.
“I have protected the account.”
Kalia Babu Comes Home
Three hours later, Kalia Babu returned.
He entered the house, placed his bag on the table and asked:
“Kamala, did anybody call on my phone?”
“Yes.”
“Who?”

“Someone from the bank.”
Kalia Babu stopped.
“The bank?”
“Yes.”
“What did he want?”
“OTP.”
Kalia Babu’s face changed.
“OTP?”
“Yes.”
“Did you give it?”
Kamala nodded.
“Yes.”
Kalia Babu almost dropped his bag.
“Kamala!”
“What?”
“You gave him the OTP?”
“Of course not.”
Kalia Babu looked relieved.
“Thank God!”
Kamala continued:
“I only gave him my half.”
Kalia Babu froze.
“Your what?”
“My half.”
“Half of what?”
“The OTP.”
Kalia Babu stared at her.
“What was the OTP?”
Kamala replied:
“4598.”
Kalia Babu immediately asked:
“Did you tell him 4598?”
“No.”
“Good!”
“I told him 2299.”
Kalia Babu remained silent.
“Why 2299?”
Kamala looked at him as though the answer was obvious.
“Because 4598 divided by two is 2299.”
Kalia Babu closed his eyes.
“Kamala…”
“Yes?”
“You didn’t tell him 4598?”
“No.”
“Absolutely?”
“Absolutely.”
Kalia Babu breathed a sigh of relief.
“Then the OTP was safe.”
Kamala smiled.
“Exactly.”
Kalia Babu then asked:
“But why did you divide it?”
She replied:
“Because the account is joint.”
Kalia Babu sat down.
For several seconds he said nothing.
Then he started laughing.
At first it was a small laugh.
Then it became louder.
Soon he was laughing uncontrollably.
Kamala became annoyed.
“Why are you laughing?”
“You divided an OTP!”
“So?”
“OTP doesn’t belong to husband and wife separately!”
“Why not?”
“Because it is a security code.”
“Then why did the bank give us a joint account?”
Kalia Babu had no answer.
⸻
The Neighbour Arrives
At that moment their neighbour Biju Rout came to the house.
“What happened?”
Kalia Babu was still laughing.
“Ask Kamala.”
Kamala explained the whole story.
Biju listened carefully.
Then he burst into laughter.
“Kamala Didi, you have invented a new banking principle!”
“What principle?”
“Joint Account—Joint OTP—Half and Half!”
Kamala became proud.
“At least I didn’t give him the complete OTP.”
Biju nodded.
“That part is true.”
Kalia Babu laughed again.
“But you invented an OTP division system!”
⸻
The Money Was Safe
That evening, Kalia Babu checked the bank account.
The balance was intact.
The amount was well above the original ₹3 crore, including the interest that had accumulated over the years.
He looked at Kamala.
“Fortunately, the money is safe.”
Kamala smiled.
“I told you.”
“But remember—nobody from the bank should ever ask you for an OTP.”
“I understand.”
“Not even half.”
Kamala nodded.
“Not even half.”
“Good.”
There was a pause.
Then Kamala asked:
“What if the OTP is an even number?”
Kalia Babu looked at her suspiciously.
“Why?”
“Then it can be divided equally.”
“Kamala!”
She started laughing.
“I was only joking.”
Kalia Babu shook his head.
“From tomorrow, I am changing the banking password.”
“Why?”
“Because I don’t trust your mathematics.”
⸻
The Story Reaches the Tea Shop
The next morning Kalia Babu went to Gopal’s tea shop.
Biju was already there.
As soon as Kalia Babu arrived, Gopal smiled.
“Here comes the owner of the joint OTP account!”
Everyone burst out laughing.
One man asked:
“Kalia Babu, what was the OTP?”
Kalia Babu immediately became serious.
“I will not tell you.”
Another man laughed.
“Why?”
“Because I have learned my lesson.”
Gopal said:
“Then what did Kamala Didi tell the caller?”
Kalia Babu replied:
“She told him only 2299.”
The entire tea shop erupted.
One old pensioner said:
“She is safer than all of us.”
Another replied:
“Yes. The fraudster got confused before he could commit the fraud.”

The Final Lesson
Later that day, Kalia Babu explained the incident to Kamala once more.
“Listen carefully. An OTP is confidential. We should never disclose it to anyone who calls us, regardless of who they claim to be.”
Kamala nodded.
“Understood.”
“And if somebody calls claiming to be from the bank?”
“I will disconnect.”
“Good.”
“And then?”
“I will contact the bank through its official channel.”
“Excellent.”
Kamala smiled.
“Now you are satisfied?”
“Yes.”
She thought for a moment.
Then she asked:
“But suppose somebody asks me for half of the OTP?”
Kalia Babu immediately replied:
“Give him nothing.”
Kamala nodded.
“Not even my half?”
“NOT EVEN YOUR HALF!”
Kamala burst out laughing.
And Kalia Babu realised that, despite all his financial precautions, he had one security risk he could never completely eliminate:
His wife’s mathematics.
The End.
