My Visit to Sri Lanka (Part-7)

As I bid farewell to Yala, Sri Lanka, on the morning of December 24, 2024, I embarked on a journey to Galle, a historic port city located on the southwestern coast of Sri Lanka. The scenic roads that led me to Galle were a perfect blend of natural beauty and rich history.
Galle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, seamlessly blends its rich history with its vibrant present. As I wandered through the city’s narrow streets, I discovered historic landmarks like the iconic Galle Fort, the National Maritime Museum, and the picturesque Galle Harbour. The city’s unique architecture, a blend of Portuguese, Dutch, and British influences, added to its charm.
I explored Galle’s hidden gems, from quaint shops and cafes to historic mosques and churches. The city’s warm and welcoming people made my experience even more enriching. As the day drew to a close, I reflected on my incredible journey from Yala to Galle.
Galle Fort: A Historical Gem
Galle Fort, located in the Bay of Galle, was built by the Portuguese in 1588 and extensively fortified by the Dutch during the 17th century. This historical, archaeological, and architectural heritage monument has maintained its polished appearance for over 400 years.
The fort has a colorful history and a multi-ethnic and multi-religious population. The Sri Lankan government and Dutch people who own properties inside the fort are working to make it one of the modern wonders of the world. UNESCO has recognized the fort’s heritage value, inscribing it as a cultural heritage UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Galle International Stadium
The Galle International Stadium, situated near Galle Fort and fringed by the Indian Ocean, is a prominent cricket stadium in Sri Lanka. The stadium has hosted several international cricket matches and is known for its picturesque surroundings.
As I concluded my visit to Galle, I was left with a deeper appreciation for Sri Lanka’s rich history and culture. The city’s unique blend of natural beauty, historic landmarks, and vibrant culture made it an unforgettable experience.
