A Love Story Born in Houston
By Lokanath Mishra
Manoja and Ratna, two accomplished software engineers, had called Houston home for nearly thirty years. Their son, Ajit, was a bright and ambitious high school student who had made many friends at his local school, including his best girlfriend, Julie. While Julie’s parents lived in Canada with her brother, she had built a life in Houston with Ajit.

As part of the American education system, Ajit and Julie both worked part-time jobs during their summer vacations. Ajit had landed a job at a canteen attached to the Mahalaxmi temple in Houston, and Julie had also joined him there. Working together, they grew closer, bonding over their shared experiences and interests. Julie was fascinated by the temple and the Hinduism it represented, spending hours listening to the priests and learning about the ancient traditions and customs. She was drawn to Ajit’s kind and gentle nature, and their friendship blossomed.

As Julie learned more about Hinduism, she felt a deep connection to the faith. She was impressed by its emphasis on compassion, self-control, and self-realization. After much contemplation, she decided to convert to Hinduism, a decision that brought her great joy and peace. Her friendship with Ajit evolved into something more, and they found themselves falling deeply in love.
After completing their higher education and securing satisfactory jobs, Julie approached Ajit with a proposal. She confessed her love for him and his culture, and expressed her desire to spend her life with him. Ajit was overjoyed and sought his parents’ blessing. Manoja and Ratna were delighted by Julie’s sincerity and devotion to their son and their culture, and they gave their consent for the couple to plan their future together.

However, Julie’s parents in Canada were not as receptive. When she visited them to share the news, they refused to give their approval for her marriage to Ajit. Despite their love for their daughter, they were hesitant about her decision to marry someone from a different cultural background and her conversion to Hinduism. The road ahead would be challenging, but Julie and Ajit were determined to follow their hearts.

Julie’s parents, who lived in Canada, were shocked and dismayed when they learned about their daughter’s decision to marry a Hindu man and convert to Hinduism. They had always envisioned a different future for Julie, one that aligned with their own cultural and religious traditions. The thought of their daughter embracing a new faith and marrying someone from a different background was unsettling to them.
However, fate had other plans. While exploring their local community, Julie’s parents stumbled upon the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), a spiritual organization that promotes the teachings of the Bhagavad Gita. Intrigued, they began attending classes and seminars, where they delved deep into the scriptures and philosophies of Hinduism.

As they studied the Bhagavad Gita, Julie’s parents experienced a profound shift in their perspective. They discovered the wisdom and insights of the ancient text, which spoke to them on a deep level. The teachings of Lord Krishna resonated with them, and they found solace in the Bhakti tradition of devotion and love.
As Julie’s parents continued to explore Hinduism through ISKCON, they underwent a remarkable transformation. They not only accepted Hinduism but also came to appreciate the beauty of their daughter’s newfound faith. Their opposition to her marriage to Ajit began to fade, replaced by a growing understanding and acceptance.

Eventually, Julie’s parents realized that their daughter’s happiness was paramount. They saw how much she loved Ajit and how deeply she had connected with Hinduism. With open hearts, they gave their blessing for the marriage, embracing Ajit as their son-in-law. The family came together to celebrate the union, surrounded by the love and support of their ISKCON community.
The wedding ceremony was a beautiful blend of Indian and Canadian traditions, reflecting the couple’s diverse backgrounds. Julie and Ajit exchanged vows in a joyous celebration that honored their love and commitment to each other. As they began their new life together, Julie’s parents looked on with pride and happiness, grateful for the unexpected journey that had brought them closer to their daughter and her husband .
