A Divine Encounter: My Visit to the Lakshmi Narasimha Temple on 16.3.25: ( Panakala Narasimha Temple)
By Lokanath Mishra:
On a serene morning of 16.3.25, I had the privilege of visiting the revered Lakshmi Narasimha Temple in Mangalagiri, Andhra Pradesh along with my wife her brother and sister in law. This ancient Vaishnavite temple, dedicated to Lord Narasimha, is renowned for its unique ritual where the deity “drinks” half of the panakam (jaggery water) offered by devotees.

As I entered the temple, I was struck by the tranquil atmosphere and the warmth of the devotees. The temple’s rich history, dating back to the 1800s, is palpable in its architecture and rituals. Also known as the Panakala Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy Temple, this sacred site is considered one of the eight mahakshetras Narasimha in India.

I was fortunate to witness the unique “Panakam” ritual, where devotees offer jaggery water to the deity. As the priest poured the panakam into the deity’s mouth, I was amazed to see that half of the liquid was seemingly consumed by the Lord. This enigmatic ritual is steeped in legend and mythology, with some believing that the hill was once a volcano, and the jaggery water neutralizes sulfur compounds, preventing a volcanic eruption.

During my visit, I also learned about the temple’s significance in Hindu mythology. As one of the eight sacred places of Lord Vishnu in India, the Lakshmi Narasimha Temple is a revered destination for devotees seeking spiritual enlightenment and solace.
The temple’s timings, from 8:30 am to 6:30 pm, allowed me to witness the Abhishekam ceremony, which takes place at 9 am every day. The temple’s lunch break, which lasts for almost 2-3 hours, provided an opportunity for devotees to rest and recharge.
As I departed the temple, I felt a deep sense of peace and spiritual connection. The Lakshmi Narasimha Temple’s unique rituals, rich history, and tranquil atmosphere make it a must-visit destination for anyone seeking a profound spiritual experience. My visit on 16.3.25 will remain etched in my memory forever, a testament to the temple’s enduring spiritual significance.
